Another self image. A very muddy self image. I will have a series of 11 images being uploaded within the next weeks time. These will consist of myself, a male, and another female. They were taken about 6 months ago. Much thanks especially to my lovely models Andrew and Cennon who also 'posed' for me. This whole shoot was taken during the middle of winter. There were many ticks, leeches and very very very cold waters. I dont think we could feel our feet or hands for days. *** The subconscious mind acts as a reservoir of thoughts, urges, pain and anxiety within the entirety of humanity. Water, a common representation of the subconscious hence is used through my work to create an 'under-tow' of messages, stressing the strong undercurrents of the interchanging gestalts of our thoughts that ultimately haunt the psyche. Moreover, the contingents between drowning and floating, falling and rising, dying and living are some of my main themes; the haunting nature of the figures subjection epitomizing the unpleasantness hidden within the unconscious. Moreover, the symbolisms of water across cultures for rebirth and new life presents the works ambiguous nature, as the figures can be interpreted as the metaphorical rise above anxieties (similarly to influential artist Rosemary Laing). It is this intent for an ambiguous concept that gives the work a variety of levels for audience identification. Drawing on the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud, this series drowns itself within the ambiguities of the subconscious mind, subliminally representing an ultimate sense of phantasm.
